About Newsdesk.org

NEWSDESK.ORG is a commercial-free, nonpoliticized news source covering important but overlooked issues from around the world -- and your own backyard.

We are a nonprofit news bureau, and count on the support of readers like you. You can donate right now.

Newsdesk's exclusive articles break ground on issues that later become front page news, such as the FCC and net neutrality, faith-based politics, Nigeria's oil strife and veterans' health care.

News You Might Have Missed, our weekly roundup of important but overlooked news from around the world, has been published Wednesdays since February 2002, and draws from dozens of English-language news outlets worldwide.

In 2007, we relaunched NYMHM, switching from an aggregated email listing to a more flexible narrative format on the Web site. This now drives tens of thousands of unique visitors monthly on the strength of just one home page update each week.

Collapse of the herring?

The herring roe fishery on the Central Coast was abruptly closed Tuesday . http://www-ops2.pac.dfompo.gc.ca/xnet/content/fns/index.cfm?pg=view_notice&lang=en&DOC_ID=99142&ID=commercial There wasn't enough fish!

Is this a sign of a collapse in the BC herring fishery? Check it out.

The 770 tons quota was not achieved. Last year the commercial l fishery took 2700 tons out of the same waters, this year and they were only able to catch 400 tons and it was shut down for lack of fish. Is any thing wrong here? Does anybody care?

The herring are repeat spawners which means that after they have laid their eggs in the inlets they return to the open Pacific to feed and live and return to spawn again .

The biomass estimates are taken prior to the fishery. A group of boats conduct a sonar search in the water of each area. In 2006 within the Central Coast area the biomass was estimated at 16,275 tons. This year the estimate prior the fishery was 6700 tons that’s a 59% drop [CUT FOR SPACE] ...

It's time to shut the roe fishery down!

I would like to submit a news item. How do I do that?
Ella

Ella ... the best way to send a news item is via email: feedback(AT)artsandmedia.net.

We have plans to add a user-posted news page in the future, as well.

There was a great Herring return this year to Victoria. I spent several days fishing off of the Admirals bridge for them.

I want to work for newsdesk.org as your correspondent in Mumbai (India)
